Prompt: Part I: Final Book Analysis (45 Points): The book, Evicted (2016), exemplifies the relationship between social conditions and poverty in America. Your task is to analyze the life of a person in the book Evicted. The goal is to critically assess how socio-structural factors shape the life of an individual. In Evicted, the lives of people are shaped by various structural factors. You may choose to focus on one factor or multiple factors that shape the outcomes and social conditions of the individual. A critical assessment of the life of the person is not a recount of their story, but rather situating the outcome/conditions of their life within societal structures (show examples from the book to advance/support your analysis). In addition, you must include 3-4 scholar articles that support your analysis. Scholar articles situate your analysis within an academic context and provide empirical data that supports/expands your analysis: for example, how race, class, gender, age, sexualities, religion, nationality/ethnicity, geography are connected to social conditions in peoples’ lives. This analysis is an opportunity for you to practice your analytical skills and engage you in critical thinking. A critical book analysis is not a summary of the book. A critical book analysis explains the life of an individual and situates it in the broader context of our society. Individual stories speak to the structure of society and examples within those stories speak to society’s social problems. The paper should demonstrate your ability to analyze the life of a person in the book and effectively develop a written analysis that situates the individual story in a broader societal context. Part II: Reflective Statement (15 Points): Reflective Statements allow students to reflect on their overall learning in the course. In this personal statement, I want you to reflect on what YOU learned about the field of Criminology from reading the book, Evicted, and engaging with the class content? Be specific by alluding to clear examples of your learning supported by the class material (1 full page required).
