Soc 2018 Final Paper Instructions Critical Thinking, Diversity, and Global Learning This critical thinking assignment requires sociological knowledge, objectivity and critical thinking. This paper analyzes information and ideas from multiple perspectives and articulates a conclusion based on your analysis. The Rough Draft is due on 7/19/2026 by 11:59pm and is worth 60 points. The Final Paper is due on 7/31/2026 by 11:59pm and is worth 150 points. You will select a peer-reviewed journal article on a topic relevant to this course that focuses on any social issue related to Diversity. All outside sources must be cited in-text and with a Works Cited page. Clearly identify each area with the use of sub-headings (I.E. Part I, Introduction; Explain an Issue and continued for each section) Must have a minimum of three data sources to support your analysis (can include textbook). The minimum length is 6 pages; the maximum length is 10 pages (not including a Title Page or the Works Cited page) in double spaced 12pt font. Part I – Peer-reviewed Research Article Analysis Section 1: Explain an Issue Introduction – Introduce the authors and title of the selected research. What topic did the researchers study? Describe the topic clearly with relevant information. What type of research method did the authors use? Who were the participants? How did they get their participants? Section 2: Relevance of Context Every research study is influenced by specific historical, cultural, and and/or environmental factors. Provide the background of the era and/or culture to place this study in context. Prior to this research study, what was previously known about this topic? Include findings from previous research (this information is found at the beginning of the article). Section 3: Identify Assumptions a. What did the authors expect to find (this may be labeled as hypotheses)? What assumptions do you think the researchers made? How did these assumptions affect the research? b. What assumptions did you have on this subject? c. Evaluate your own as well as the researcher’s assumptions. Section 4: Understand Implications and Make Conclusions What were the results of the study? What did the authors conclude about their study? What are the practical implications of this research? What impact do the findings of this research have for society and for professionals (i.e., medical, mental health, education, criminal justice, etc.)? Part II – Reflection on Diversity and Global Learning Section 1: Build Self-Awareness Continue this section of the paper using the same or closely related topic as used in Part I. Explain briefly the topic of the paper. What are your attitudes and beliefs about this subject? How did you arrive at these beliefs (place your attitudes in context)? Have they changed over time? What are the attitudes, behaviors or beliefs of people in the US on this topic? Provide data to support your statements about the US attitudes or beliefs (consider laws, polls on attitudes, public reactions). Section 2: Examine Perspectives Examine information from your past discussions and other existing research on the country that you chose for the semester’s diversity discussions. What are the attitudes, behaviors or beliefs of people in the selected country on this topic? Provide data to support your statements about their attitudes or beliefs (consider laws, polls on attitudes, public reactions). Explain the sociological view on the subject. Provide research and supporting data for this perspective. Make the connection explicit between the sociology course and the topic. Evaluate which of the four perspectives (your own, US, other country, sociological) is the best and why you came to that conclusion. Section 3: Address Diversity Explain the history and power structures connected to this subject as they exist in the US and the selected country. Be specific and detailed. How do the power structures of the US and the selected country influence the worldviews of people living in those countries? Maintain cultural relativism. Additional notes regarding the grading of this assignment: Integrate sociological concepts from this course in the paper (place concepts in bold type). Thoroughly define and apply sociological concepts. 10% of the paper grade is based on appropriately citing outside sources within the body of the paper and at the end of the paper. 10% of the paper grade is based on your ability to communicate effectively in written format. Appropriate spelling, punctuation, grammar, capitalization, and clarity in writing is the goal. Power structures are the institutional systems and people who are able to influence and/or control norms, laws, and policies of societies. By definition, these people and systems have authority, power, and/or control over others.
